J. Michael Armentrout, "Hypatia's Dream: An Introduction to Molluscs." An original 1984 signed and numbered large diptych engraving on Arches, numbered 8 out of an edition 20. The title refers to Hypatia of Egypt (370 A.D. to 415 A.D.), a mathematician, Platonic philosopher, astronomer, teacher, and physicist. Hypatia was both female and pagan in an increasingly Christian environment. In the spring of 415 A.D., a band of Christian monks seized Hypatia on the street, beat her, and dragged her body to a church where they were alleged to have flayed her alive with clam shells and burned her remains.
Excellent condition. 31 x 17".
